How To Find The Best Insurance Rates Online

Insurance quotes can vary widely from provider to provider. Whether you are shopping for car insurance, home or life insurance, or even a bundle, you can compare multiple companies’ rates online and see which one offers you the best bang for your buck.

In this article, we discuss how to find the most valuable coverage options to suit your needs.

We’ll walk you through the shopping, comparing and purchasing the optimal policy.

Step 1: Gather the necessary information

Have all documents at hand before starting the application form.  The information that you provide when applying for coverage needs to be accurate.  When filling a form online, if you don’t have the document in front of you and try to guestimate the answer, you may be getting a quote that in fact, you may not be eligible to use.  Besides, you’ll need the information when you finally choose to purchase the policy so have it handy.  If the company discovers any false information on the application form, they may cancel the policy or refuse to pay any claims.  Depending on the type of insurance you are shopping for, the information pertaining to that policy needs to be readily available and very precise.  If you are looking for more than one type of coverage – you’ll need to provide the pertinent info for each type of coverage separately.  Sort each type of coverage in a folder of its own for now.

Step 2: Determine the level of coverage that you need

Next, you’ll need to decide on the level of coverage that you want.  Again, if you are looking at more than one type of coverage, you’ll need to assess these individually for now.  Keep these choices in their separate “type of insurance” folder for quick reference.

Step 3: Request quotes

Once you have all of your information ready and you also know what type(s) and level(s) of coverage you’re looking for, you can either use a quote comparison tool or ask for quotes directly from the companies’ website.

Quote comparison tool: With a comparison tool, you can enter your information once per type of insurance needed and it will compare insurance quotes from providers in your area.  While this method saves you time, it may not be as personal as choosing the companies yourself.  You also have to trust that these tools are current and precise in getting you the best deal in your area.

Direct online quote: You can get free, instant quotes from many providers’ websites, but you’ll have to visit each site one-by-one and manually input and compare your results.

If you choose the latter, you will need to create a comparison chart.

Here is an example of a do-it-yourself comparison chart.

NAME OF COMPANY

CAR INSURANCE

HOME INSURANCE

LIFE INSURANCE

OTHER INSURANCE

*BUNDLE

* Once you have quotes for each type of coverage from a company, you can save as much as 28% when you bundle (use the same company for all types).  If using this method, don’t forget to ask your financial institution about their coverage and bundle rates.

Step 4: Purchase a policy

If you’re satisfied with the quality of coverage and pricing that you’ve found, you can go ahead and purchase that policy!   You can also request same-day insurance just as soon as you make the first payment, or you can schedule it to start on a future date.

NOTE:  Because insurance rates change quickly, remember to repeat this exercise before renewing your policies each year.
